In other words, which is the cause and which is the effect. There is evidence to suggest that the CO2 levels historically have lagged the increased temperatures, rather than leading them, and that is an indicator that higher CO2 was an effect of warmer temperatures, but higher temperatures increased the total mass and rate of growth of vegetation covering the globe, which then reduced the levels of CO2 until a new equilibrium was reached.

Most systems have a natural response to a step function which shows a certain amount of overshoot, followed by ringing which continues for a few cycles until it is dampened out at the new equilibrium level resulting from the changed input condition. While that ringing is ongoing, an observer would be hard pressed to determine whether the response was leading or lagging the input, if that was all the information they had. When you have a complex system with multiple inputs that can result in similar responses, determining which input caused the response may be impossible if the only observable is the result.

That is what we have going on now with this Business of Global Warming. We have observations of results without corresponding observations of inputs, and several hypotheses regarding what is the cause of the observed effect, with a huge amount of speculation regarding future effects of certain inputs. The problem is that the system has not had enough time to respond to the change in input conditions that we are attempting to evaluate, and we do not know that the change in input is a high enough magnitude to swamp the dampening function of the system so that it even shows as an observable shift in the system response.

Bottom line is it is all guesswork, and far to many people are gullible enough to believe anything a "scientist" tells them. With recent low water water levels allowing additional visibility, a homeowner discovered a plastic sharps container of what was identified as medical waste on the bank of the Shiawassee River in Owosso Township. The container appeared to be intact and was removed by Public Safety personnel on September 8, 2010. Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment – Medical Waste Regulatory Program staff inspected the container and its contents and confirmed that it is most likely a residual from the criminal dumping of medical waste that occurred in the summer of 2007. The medical waste originated from an elderly care facility in Livingston County.

As a reminder, the Shiawassee County Health Department recommends all individuals avoid swimming in the Shiawassee River due to potential contact with bacteria and/or other infectious material. Partial body contact such as wading, fishing, canoeing, etc. is acceptable. The recent discovery of a medical waste container warrants further precautionary measures while wading, fishing, and canoeing in the river.

“Unfortunately, some still view water bodies as a place to conceal the unwanted”, said Larry Johnson, director of Environmental Health, “That mentality is changing as we become more aware of what an important ecological and economic resource we have in the Shiawassee River. The homeowner immediately notified the proper authorities and we are fortunate to have so many alert residents that care about the River.”

Please take necessary steps to protect yourself such as wearing tennis shoes or boots if you are walking along the river. Contact your medical provider if you experience any cuts or abrasions while in and/or around the river.
